Public Schools and Teachers

When I was a child, I remember my best teacher called Aldo, who was so smart, teached me science and biology.  These were my favorite subjects. One day, he told me, “You should study hard because Peru needs good workers”. Now I am working in the Ministry of Education where I can understand the Education System in our country. Although many people believe that teachers are the problem, I think that they can give solutions to public schools.

First of all, some parents think that teachers of public schools are rude with the students because they hit them. For this reason the children suffer a lot. Take for example there are a lot of cases of bullying between teachers and students. However, I think that teachers are the second fathers or mothers of their students because children spend a lot of time in school where they grow and learn. In that moment, the role of a father is taken by the teachers because they should teach them with love.

Second, the majority of people believe that teachers don’t have abilities of teaching.  They cannot explain the subjects easily in public schools. Therefore the students repeat the year. On the other hand, teachers can get more abilities because they can study in new institutions made by the government.  These programs teach a new style of teaching in our country.

Third, a lot of people think that the teachers are boring because they don’t have good methodology to catch the attention of students. In contrast, the new style of teaching   is interesting because students will have computers and laptops. Therefore the world the internet is part of the student’s curriculum. They are motivated every day with the new skills learned.

Finally, teachers can give solutions to solve the problems of education system because they are the second fathers and mothers in schools. They have new abilities to  motivate students with new styles off class. In my opinion, if teachers feel well in their work, students will a better future in public schools.

Racism in Peru

Last week my little nephew called Adrianito, who is so smart, told me that he was attacked by his classmates.  Every day they called him “Black”. It is not the only case in this school and other Peruvian schools.  Although many people believe that Peru is not a racist country, I think that racism is a principal social issue in our country.

First of all, opponents say that the people of their own race are better than others. They believe that different races of people have different characters and abilities. On the other hand, racism affects many people because they suffer social exclusion. Therefore, they feel everyday abandoned by the government and the society.

Second, opponents say that education in our country doesn’t show racism like a social issue. They think that the students are worried about other problems like economy, work and pollution. However the students suffer bullying in their school because of race. This produce negative consequence in their achievements. According to research, “Two of six students that suffer racist bullying leave school when they are young.”

Peru is a racist country because you can see victims like black and indian people. They have few opportunities to study and get a good job in the society. In addition, you can see a TV program called “Black Mama” where an actor makes jokes about black people.  I think this program is a good example of racism and discrimination in a Peruvian media.

In conclusion, racism is the principal social issue in our country. As a result, many people are victims. Take for example, social discrimination, bullying and mass media. According to Stephan Bico,“The most potent weapon in the hand of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed”. For this reason, we have to change this situation, and the only way to start it is to imagine a democratic world without racism
